Session One

How A Podcast Can Contribute to Your Community Group

Friday 17th March 6pm-8:30pm

In this session we will discuss podcasting as a distinct medium, and how podcasts can be useful to a community campaign. We will explore different types of podcasts, and how they would best suit particular campaign goals.

You will create a pre-production plan for your podcast that considers your goals, your audience and resources available. You can work in a group or by yourself.

Session Two

Interview Techniques

Friday 24th March 6pm-8:30pm

This session will be a continuation on the strengths of podcasting as a medium. We will listen to examples of interviews, discuss interview techniques and practice interviewing each other. 

Session Three

Media Law Made Simple

Friday 31st March 6pm-8:30pm

This session is an introduction to media law as it pertains to podcasting in Australia.

Session Four

Researching Your Podcast

Tuesday 4th April 6pm-8:30pm

Kathleen Syme Library Training and Learning Space

In this session you will be choosing a topic for a podcast episode and learning how to research that topic for the podcasting medium. You will define the goals of your story and explore what it takes to make this story compelling, nuanced and complete. You will identify a potential interview guest, research them, and write interview questions.

Session Five

Recording in a Studio

Friday 14th April 6pm-8:30pm

Kathleen Syme Library Recording Studio

This session will cover recording in the Kathleen Syme Library's dedicated recording studio. It will be a practical lesson in how to set up the equipment and how to get the most out of a microphone. We will then put our skills to use by interviewing a guest.

Session Six

Recording Over The Internet

Friday 21st April 6pm-8:30pm

Kathleen Syme Library Recording Studio

In this session we will return to the recording studio, revise the technical side of recording, and learn how to make a recording over the internet. 

Session Seven

Field Recordings

Friday 28th April 6pm-8:30pm

Kathleen Syme Library Meeting Room 3

This session will cover the use of a portable recorder. We will discuss choosing suitable equipment for field recording and using it correctly. Then we will leave the classroom and practice making recordings in the grounds of the library.

Session Eight

Home Recording Setups

Friday 5th May 6pm-8:30pm

Kathleen Syme Library Meeting Room 3

In this session we'll discuss the selection of and use of home recording equipment for podcasting. We will concentrate on the best techniques for recording in a space that is not acoustically treated.

Session Nine

Editing Part 1

Friday 12th May 6pm-8:30pm

Kathleen Syme Library Training and Learning Space

In this session we will be discussing how to tell a story through the medium of podcasting. You will learn how to mark up audio, create a transcript, and create a basic edit.

Session Ten

Editing Part 2

Friday 19th May 6pm-8:30pm

Kathleen Syme Library Training and Learning Space

In this session we will continue on basic editing techniques. We will look at adding music, atmos or sound effects to a podcast to enhance storytelling.
